What is machine learning (ML)?

Machine learning (ML) concerns the use of computer algorithms to uncover insights, not by sheer processing power alone, but the ability to learn and improve with more data and repetition.

As an analytical tool, ML finds knowledge out of vast sums of data.  It does so by looking for patterns, but more importantly, in discovering the hidden rules by which the data is governed.  Through cycles of training and testing with large datasets, the algorithm builds and improves the ML model so that it can define outputs for net new data, thus solving data problems beyond unaided human ability.
